Today at Disney's D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, Marvel president Kevin Feige gave us our first look at Doctor Strange.
Marvel went first in Disney's two-hour live-action presentation, with Feige briefly recapping Phase 2 and saying it was now time to look at the first movies of Phase 3.
However, with cameras not rolling until November on the Scott Derrickson-directed film, Feige went with a video message from Benedict Cumberbatch (who promised "girls, cars, explosions ... and a bit of astral projection") and a montage of production art to give us some idea of how the movie will look (note: the image above is not from that).
In a word? Weird. And that's a good thing, since Doctor Strange will take us to the cosmic, mystical side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From brief looks at Strange himself (cloaked in dark red and blue hues), Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) to bizarre scenes of rows of cars levitating above a city street to glimpses of otherworldly vistas and strange planets cast in golden light or psychedelic colors, what the audience saw was a visual aesthetic we have not experienced in Marvel movies before (although there's a bit of it in Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy and the "quantum realm" sequence in Ant-Man).
Doctor Strange starts shooting in London this November and will come out Nov. 4, 2016. Will it be the weirdest, most mind-blowing Marvel movie yet? From the sneak peek we got today, it could well be.
