Marvel’s Black Panther has landed an Oscar-nominated actress in the role of T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) mother, Ramonda. The cast of the Marvel movie is shaping up nicely with the recent addition of Angela Bassett in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How cool is that?!

The news of Bassett’s casting was officially announced via Marvel, who was skimpy on the details besides her being the newly minted King of Wakanda’s mother. In the pages of the Marvel comics, Ramonda was actually T’Challa’s surrogate mom, having married King T'Chaka after his wife N'Yami, T’Challa’s mother, died in childbirth. Will Marvel simplify the relationship by having Ramonda be T’Challa’s birth mother rather than being the stepmom? That remains to be seen, although I don't see why they'd do that.

Black Panther isn’t Bassett’s first comic book movie rodeo, having played the villainous Amanda Waller in 2011's Green Lantern. The American Horror Story actress was also a huge fan favorite to play Storm in Bryan Singer’s X-Men back in 2000, but the role ultimately went to Halle Berry — much to everyone’s chagrin (even to this day). Le Sigh.

Directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed), Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke and Florence Kasumba. The movie will open the doors to Wakanda on Feb. 16, 2018.

What do you guys think of the addition of Angela Bassett as Ramonda in Marvel’s Black Panther?
