Is Marvel finally ready for a new X-Men animated series?

Remember two years ago when Marvel canceled its Fantastic Four comic (which still hasn't returned) amid rumblings of a falling out with Fox, the studio which owns the film rights to both the FF and the X-Men? Well, while the X-Men still got their comics, tie-in merchandise did become scarce for a while. Now, that seems primed to change, and not just because Fox and Marvel managed to get together on Legion.

Later this year, Marvel will relaunch all of its X-titles under the banner "ResurrXion," introducing three new team books and several solo titles. Marvel hopes it will be a return to X-Men glory days following the Inhumans vs. X-Men event, and according to Bleeding Cool, it will also mean seeing a lot more of our favorite mutants outside of comics. That means new toys, new games and, apparently, a new animated series.

Yes, if this report is correct (and take it with grain of salt for now), a new X-Men cartoon will join Legion and the upcoming X-Men live-action series on the small screen. We don't know when it might air yet or which team members it will focus on, but apparently we can expect to hear more later this year.

Though they've shown up in other animated properties recently, the X-Men haven't had a cartoon to call their own since Wolverine and the X-Men was canceled back in 2010. That's a shame, particularly since fans who grew up with the original X-Men cartoon are now at the age where they like to sit their own children down in front of superhero cartoons on a Saturday morning. It sure would be nice to have a new one to show them.

Again, we can't be sure just yet, but if this report is true, we could be getting a lot more X-Men fun in the coming years.
