An alternate version of Captain America from Marvel Puzzle Quest is making her comic book debut in May's third issue of Saladin Ahmed and Javier Rodriguez's new Exiles series. Yes, you heard that right, HER. This iteration of Cap is portrayed by S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Peggy Carter, who entered the super soldier program and became the iconic hero following the assassination of Steve Rogers before he could do so.

"Captain Carter" was introduced in the summer of 2016 in honor of Captain America's 75th-anniversary celebration. Several alternate versions of the character were introduced across a number of Marvel games, like Puzzle Quest, Avengers Academy, Avengers Alliance 2, Contest of Champions and Future Fight. The different Caps included Jeremiah Rogers (aka Captain America 1901), who rode with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders; Sharon Rogers, the daughter of Steve and Peggy who takes up the mantle in a world where Steve was never frozen at the end of World War II; and Steve Rogers becoming the Civil Warrior after the first Civil War ended in the death of Iron Man.

In Exiles #3 (out May 9), Captain America (aka Peggy Carter) "faces off against an apocalyptically armed Red Skull," according to the solicit info. The Exiles (led by the time-traveling mutant Blink) arrive in this alternate history and want to join the fight, but a brigade of Watchers may prevent them from meddling with the fabric of the space-time continuum. Oh, and did we mention the Time-Eater is still hot on their tail? Since the team is always jumping from place to place (a la Quantum Leap), Peggy's Captain America will only be a fleeting guest star in this issue, but let's hope she gets a bigger role in Marvel Comics sometime soon.

Spider-Gwen started from equally humble beginnings; now she's a solo series star. Could Captain Carter follow the same track?
