Marvel slips in clever 616 easter egg in wake of Secret Wars’ multiversal shake-up

The multiverse might be a different place, but that doesn’t mean Marvel Comics is done using “616.”

As hardcore comic fans know, Earth-616 was the “main” Marvel universe for a long time. The multiverse was a big place, but the main continuity stories almost all took place on Earth-616. All that changed with the Secret Wars event a couple of years ago, when all the various Earths collided in a colossal event that left only one reality standing — the “Prime” Marvel Universe. So, with the Earth-616 designation not all that necessary anymore, Marvel slipped the number scheme into the latest issue of Invincible Iron Man.

In Invincible Iron Man No. 8, Riri Williams shows up to lend a hand to S.H.I.E.L.D. after a terrorist attack. Following a second attack, Nick Fury (the younger one) calls S.H.I.E.L.D. command to report the “616” that just occurred. So apparently a “616” now refers to a metahuman attack, or just anything generally weird that occurs per S.H.I.E.L.D.

Most likely this is just a fun little Easter egg writer Brian Michael Bendis slipped in, but it’s still nice to see Marvel having a good time with its history. Did you catch the little nod while reading?
