Marvel Studios VFX supervisor reveals which Infinity Stone was most important for Thanos to win Infinity War

Thanks to the insight of Marvel Studios VFX Dan DeLeeuw, we can now vent our Avengers: Infinity War sadness and frustration on a very specific Infinity Stone. While speaking to Inverse, he revealed that while all of the powerful Gems were instrumental in Thanos' plan to balance out the universe, one of the six had the most power in wiping away Bucky, Groot, Spider-Man, Maria Hill, and the rest.

“The Power Stone was blipping them out of existence,” DeLeeuw said, going on to explain that the VFX team was originally unsure which stone would achieve the disappearing act. Would it be the Reality Stone, since Thanos is creating a new universe, or the Soul Stone, since the Mad Titan was clearing souls from existence? When the latter Gem was at the forefront of the discussion, they conceived of a "nimbus of energy or soul" that would fade away, before they settled on the ashy disintegration from the Power Stone.

“All the Infinity Stones have their signature color and appearance as a visual effect,” DeLeeuw continued. “So the ‘blip out,’ we thought, ‘What would all the stones do to a person, blipping them out?’”

The infamous "I don't feel so good" line uttered by Tom Holland's Peter Parker has become a sort of tagline for the film and even turned into a viral Internet meme. DeLeeuw now finds it hilarious, but he and the rest of his crew were a bit more downtrodden when they were bringing the scene to life during the edit process.

“When we saw Tom Holland, even in its rough form without any effect, we were crying in the edit,” he said. "It was a good sign. We could work with this. But gosh, there’s no way to make it better, because it’s Tom knocking it out of the park. It’s like the son apologizing for something he had no control over.”

Deciding which body parts would go first were also an important factor. Peter and Quill's faces disappeared last, so we could see the tragic expressions on their face, whereas Groot's arms were the last to go since Rocket was reaching for him in an almost fatherly way."

Oh, G-d, here come the waterworks again. Excuse us...
