As the ratings continue to slide, Marvel is taking a surprisingly cool, comic-centric approach to promoting ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The company is tapping some acclaimed comic artists to design special posters to promote the remaining episodes in season one, with each poster teasing some plot points from the final few installments.

The first piece was created by artist Mike Del Mundo (Elektra, X-Men Legacy) and is a very cool, retro take on the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo turned into a rat maze. Inside? Agents on the run, while a (literal) rat stalks the halls. Hmm, considering the twist from this week’s episode about the Clairvoyant, I think we can see where this is going.

The limited-edition, high-quality prints will be sold at each week, but act fast, because they’re only printing 100 of each poster. The company plans to release a new poster each week. Hey, even if you don’t like the show, these look to at least be some cool Marvel prints.

Series producer Jeff Bell opened up to Entertainment Weekly about the initiative and explained the emotions behind the idea:

“I think it’s a really lovely way to bring it all back, because a number of the artists have worked for Marvel and are working for Marvel, and so to go back to them and let us inspire them for the work and see how they respond to it is really exciting. And I think in the world of Mondo and limited edition art, getting to do something like this will feel really special to fans who collect them, and for us as mementos of the show it was a really exciting idea.”

Bell also touched on where they’re going with the series in the remaining half-dozen episodes, and compared the show to an extremely long movie. As season one winds down, get ready for the action-packed third act:

“For fans who saw ‘End of the Beginning,’ we’ve been looking for The Clairvoyant, and the team came to some realizations and conclusions where we think it’s is a high level S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and so the idea of S.H.I.E.L.D. being a maze and that there’s a rat in the maze and no one trusting anyone…I thought Mike did a great job of capturing that. I think if you saw 16, the stakes really went up a lot, and I think when you come back next week for 17, that will only continue to be more true. And we feel like if you look at a 22 episode season as a movie, we’re in the 3rd act of the movie. And from here on, its just full on action and urgency and momentum, and sometimes it takes awhile to set everything up, but we think we’re going to bring all those dominoes together really nicely for here through 22.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesday nights on ABC. Are you still watching? If not, do you at least want one of these nifty posters?
