We just got one step closer to The Defenders today! Marvel has announced they've found the showrunners who will assemble the team that'll see the Man Without Fear, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist unite for the first time in the upcoming Netflix Original Series.
And they had to look no further than their own Marvel Cinematic Universe backyard.
Marvel has revealed that Daredevil Season 2 showrunners and executive producers Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez will return as showrunners for The Defenders, with Drew Goddard returning as executive producer.
The Defenders will see Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage and Finn Jones’ Iron Fist team up in the epic eight-episode miniseries event that will unite our New York City heroes as they “face their biggest threat yet.” Here's what Petrie and Ramirez said in an official statement:
“This is the big one. Four amazing casts, four amazing series, now all in one amazing story. We are thrilled at the opportunity to deliver the show that both we and the fans have been waiting for.”
With Netflix vice president of original content Cindy Holland adding:
“Doug and Marco captivated our members around the world with their continuation of the story of Matt Murdock in 'Marvel’s Daredevil,' and we can’t wait to see how they and Drew will introduce the full Defenders team to our global audience.”
Marvel Head of TV Jeph Loeb -- who will also serve as executive producer alongside Petrie, Ramirez and Goddard -- shared his excitement about them coming on board the series:
“We're incredibly excited to be able to bring our four street level heroes together in an epic tale woven by Doug and Marco whose work on ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ speaks for itself. They write and produce not only great action and adventure, but also the heart and touch of humor that's makes us Marvel. With the inclusion of Drew Goddard, we've got a team that's as formidable as the Defenders themselves.”
In a recent interview, Charlie Cox discussed the important role Daredevil Season 2 plays in paving the way for The Defenders, and Matt Murdock’s possible future leadership role with the team:
“He can’t do this alone. He’s been so adamant about being a lone wolf, about doing it himself, so I think that in order for him to get to The Defenders we needed this second season. We needed to see him be broken individually so that he can - he’s willing to form a team. The lesson that Matt has had to learn in the second season of Daredevil is that he needs help.”
Filming on Marvel’s The Defenders is set to kick off toward the end of 2016 and will premiere sometime in 2017 on Netflix. Do you think Marvel chose wisely? And who -- or what -- do you think will be the Defenders' “biggest threat yet”?
