Further expanding Marvel's popular galaxy of Star Wars comics, this first look at Obi-Wan & Anakin has two classic Clone Wars-era characters join up to battle the Dark Side in their own new adventure series.   Chronicling the time period between The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, this five-issue mini-series launches in January and is written by Charles Soule (Star Wars: Lando, Death of Wolverine) and drawn by Marco Checchetto (Star Wars: Shattered Empire).

The stellar team-up was announced Saturday afternoon at New York Comic Con during Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada's "Cup o' Joe" panel.  It's Marvel's first attempt at exploring the relationship between the two iconic characters, set within the tumultuous period of the prequel era after Obi-Wan's master, Qui-Gon Jinn, is dispatched by Darth Maul.

Soule sees the master and pupil dynamics as a way to portray something different than the way the two were depicted in the Clone Wars cartoon and hopes to bring in a more Kurosawa-type, Seven Samurai feel.

“I want people to set their preconceived notions about what an Obi-Wan and Anakin story is aside,” Soule says. “We’ve seen a lot of them, but this is something that's going to feel and look different. What you have is a person who goes from being a boy to being a young man in between those two films, which is really significant.  Ultimately that’s kind of like what Jedi were: warrior monks wandering the galaxy doing awesome things."  The series is “getting back to the heart of what I think Jedi can be, when they’re not weighed down by war and the Sith attacking them."

Here's Marvel's official synopsis for Obi-Wan & Anakin #1:

"Before their military heroism in the Clone Wars, before their tragic battle on Mustafar, and many decades before their final confrontation on the Death Star... they were Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Padawan learner, Anakin Skywalker. It's been a few years since Obi-Wan pledged to train the young "chosen one," but even as they have grown closer through training, it has been a difficult road. Now, called to a remote planet for assistance, Master and Padawan may be pushed to the breaking point. Writer Charles Soule (Lando, She-Hulk, Daredevil) and artist Marco Checchetto (Star Wars: Shattered Empire, Avengers World, Punisher) bring us a tale of the Jedi at the height of their power..."
