As Marvel ramps up the hype for next spring’s Avengers: Infinity War, it’s also been doing its part on the comic book side, prepping a major lore milestone with an upcoming five-part Infinity Countdown comic book event series, the biggest thing in the Marvel Universe since Secret Wars.
The newly-announced project is set to debut in March, following a one-shot primer, Infinity Countdown Prime. In a blast of information leading up to the event, Marvel went heavy on the intrigue, calling the cycle “a new story so big it will engulf the Guardians of the Galaxy and bring about the end of that venerable group before calling the entire Marvel Universe to bear.”
The creative team behind Infinity Countdown includes Guardians of the Galaxy writer Gerry Duggan, Old Man Logan artist Mike Deodato, Jr., and versatile Marvel editor Jordan D. White. According to White:
“The epic promises to include everybody from the Avengers to the X-Men and all heroes and villains in between, as the mystery surrounding the Stones swells and pulls in more and more major movers and shakers. All the while, mysterious forces forge a new weapon like nothing ever seen before — how does it connect to the Infinity Stones? What will it mean for the Marvel Universe? And who will possess it?”
Of course, anything having to do with Infinity Stones might just make for good reading leading up to the release of the next Avengers movie, Infinity War, which has everything to do with the mysterious and powerful gems.
Infinity Countdown Prime is set to release in February, with the first issue of the Infinity Countdown series releasing in March. Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4.
