Last weekend, fans went to comic book stores across the country to participate in the annual Free Comic Book Day event, where over 50 free comics were available from various publishers (granted, not all of them were easy to find). While this year’s FCBD may be over, though, Marvel isn’t going to let its stories get buried until the inevitable trade paperbacks. Instead, both Free Comic Book Day 2018: Amazing Spider-Man/Guardians of the Galaxy #1 and Free Comic Book Day 2018: Avengers/Captain America are available to read online for free.
The only catch for Marvel’s FCBD titles is that they are only freely available on comiXology, but it’s very easy to set up an account. It’s important to note that Marvel’s issues were not throwaway stories or standalone adventures. Each of the one-shots set up the next year of the Avengers, Captain America, and Amazing Spider-Man comics with their new creative teams. The Guardians of the Galaxy segment was just a recap of the team’s recent history with the Infinity Stones and the current Infinity Countdown event.
Nick Spencer and artist Ryan Ottley made their debut as the new Amazing Spider-Man creative team in their FCBD one-shot, which reset Peter Parker back into his habitually familiar loser role. The big twist is that one of Spider-Man’s minor enemies is now going to be an integral part of his life in an unforeseen way.
Jason Aaron and artist Sara Pichelli’s Avengers tale brought Black Panther and Odin together for a fateful meeting about the pending threat from the Celestials. One of the Avengers’ most iconic foes has thrown their support behind the Fallen Celestial and the Dark Host who are coming to destroy the Earth.
Finally, Ta-Nehisi Coates and Leinil Francis Yu’s Captain America story reintroduced a classic Marvel villain/antihero as the latest nemesis for Cap.
