Iron Fist is back with a punch—a supernaturally powerful glowing punch.
Last year, when showrunner Raven Metzer was doing the Defenders San Diego Comic-Con panel, the self-proclaimed “mega-level nerd” mentally fast-forwarded through time and told an anxious crowd that this season is going to have a black belt in action.
And that's just the tip of the footage iceberg. Today's SDCC audience also got an exclusive look at Danny Rand's alter ego standing ninja-like in the middle of the road, if ninjas wear hoodies and sneakers and jeans, running straight into a truck until he swerves—and you think that’s the end, until he positively smashes the front of that truck. You just know this is the Hand creeping through the darkness, especially when more henchmen with insanely powerful assault rifles appear out of nowhere. Does Danny even need to waste so much energy kicking them in the face when he can just punch the asphalt and knock them all unconscious?
Star Finn Jones admitted that it was brutally cold the night of that fight scene, which might be what motivated him to get his blood pumping, and the energy didn’t run out there. Actress Jessica Henwick, who plays Colleen, showed off some kickass moves in a restaurant kitchen, where she shattered everything short of the villains’ skulls. As if that wasn’t enough, she went up against two knife-wielding enemies bare fisted in a tattoo shop, without getting one cut.
“She lost her cult-like religion and her passion,” said Henwick. “But you don’t want to make her mad. The most exciting thing for Colleen is the introduction of Daughters of the Dragon. Seeing these two badasses together is something I think the fans are going to love.”
Stunt Coordinator Clayton Barber called the upcoming season more punk rock. He wanted to make Iron Fist all “punk rock Kung Fu.” As a comics fan, Metzer was really intrigued by the mythology of Ku Lung and the other side of those snowy peaks, into the mystical temple where Danny and Davos enter combat as the last two unbeaten warriors vying for the ultimate prize of fighting the dragon. If just the thought of that gives you nightmares, try fighting Typhoid Mary, who we learned will be the mystery character played by Alice Eve (Star Trek).
“What I loved about it was that it was very, very violent,” Eve said of Season 2, in which she plays the slash-happy character flashing her machetes onscreen for the first time in the Marvel Universe. “But the reason that I took the role was because I got to play someone with multiple personalities.”
Typhoid Mary isn’t Season 2’s only new reveal, though. “This season will take you on some unexpected turns as well as introducing you to some unexpected characters,” said Sacha Dawan, who throws punches as Davos.
One of those unexpected things involves a club, smoke, throbbing red lights and—did his fist just light up?
You shouldn’t make any plans for Sept. 7—the newly anounced release date—because you’re going to be home binge-watching Iron Fist on Netflix.
