A genre vet has been tapped as the new showrunner for the second season of Marvel’s Iron Fist, replacing Season 1 showrunner Scott Buck, who’s now moved on to Marvel’s Inhumans on ABC.
The gig has now gone to Raven Metzner, who will be steering the second season of the Netflix series as executive producer and showrunner. Which is likely a good thing, since most critics and fans agree Season 1 didn't live up to its full potential. The series lacked a clear direction (among many other things) and took way too long to get into the thick of the story (although to be fair, that's a common refrain with Marvel's Netflix series). Also, talk about wasting Zhou Cheng (Lewis Tan)!
Metzner recently ended a stint as executive producer on Fox’s freshly canceled Sleepy Hollow, was a consulting producer on Heroes Reborn and Falling Skies, and once upon a time penned the script for Elektra. Yes, I’m talking about the Daredevil spinoff movie starring Jennifer Garner. Metzner also co-created and executive-produced Six Degrees.
Here’s what executive producer and Marvel head of TV Jeph Loeb said:
“Raven’s love of all things Iron Fist and his extensive knowledge of martial arts films made him the perfect choice to continue telling the adventures of Danny Rand and Colleen Wing. Season One and The Defenders are only the beginning of this fantastic action packed tale.”
Season 2 will see Danny Rand (Finn Jones) return as the Living Weapon after his stint in this summer's The Defenders. Also back is Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick), who will team up with Luke Cage’s Misty Knight (Simone Missick). The Daughters of the Dragon united on the small screen for the first time, you guys!
What do you think of Raven Metzner as the new showrunner for the second season of Marvel’s Iron Fist? A positive, lateral, or negative move for Marvel's lowest-rated super-series?
