We don't yet know much about Marvel's Luke Cage series, other than that Mike Colter plays the titular hero, who gains super strength in a failed experiment and takes up a life as a hero for hire. The show is one of the most anticipated projects Marvel Studios has in the works, though. It will ultimately be the first project from the studio with a person of color in the leading role, and will bring a fan-favorite character to live action for the first time. Now we may know who one of the show's villains is.
Deadline reports that Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actress Alfre Woodard (Annabelle, State of Affairs) has joined the show as "Minetta," who's described as a "powerful woman in local politics" who'll have "an impact" on Cage's life. I'm excited about Woodard joining any show, but here's where her Luke Cage role gets interesting: Deadline's hearing that she'll be playing some riff on Marvel villain Black Mariah, a criminal who's been an enemy to both Cage and Iron Fist, who'll be getting his own Netflix series soon. Marvel's not commenting at the moment, but given how many little ties to other heroes and villains Daredevil packed into its first season, it wouldn't be surprising that an enemy who covers multiple heroes would be introduced.
Whatever the role actually is, Woodard is an absolute powerhouse of an actress. She's one of the best of her generation, and she could bring an incredible presence to whatever Marvel has in store for her.
Luke Cage arrives next year.
