In the second move of its kind to be revealed in as many days, another streaming-only show is finding an afterlife on cable. Freeform TV’s August lineup reveals that the previously Hulu-only Marvel’s Runaways will premiere last season’s debut episode next month on the Disney-owned cable channel.
Marvel’s Runaways is entering its second full season at Hulu, and there’s no evidence that all-new episodes will be appearing anywhere else for the immediate future. But as part of its August scheduling rollout, Freeform announced it will host “an encore presentation” of the Season 1 premiere episode, following the August 2 season finale of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger.
Based on the comics by Adrian Alphona and Brian K. Vaughan, Runaways ran for 10 episodes in its inaugural season last year at Hulu. The teen-centric story arc focuses on a group of super-powered teens who — you guessed it — run away once they find out their parents are bad, bad people. Hulu renewed Runaways for a 13-episode second season back in January, only two months after Season 1 made its successful November 2017 debut.
Freeform didn’t reveal in its announcement whether viewers can expect additional Season 1 episodes of Runaways to appear on the channel. But the announcement set a precedent, demonstrating that the behind-the-scenes mechanism is definitely in place to funnel Runaways in the unconventional direction of streaming first, then cable second.
The Freeform news comes hot on the heels of an earlier report this week that Comedy Central has picked up exclusive second-run rights from Netflix to air past episodes of BoJack Horseman. That agreement will land the Will Arnett-voiced character and pals in Comedy Central's sweet post-South Park timeslot each week, beginning this September 26.
