Last we saw of Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), he had awoken in a sickbed, being tended to by some nuns at the end of The Defenders miniseries last summer. Most people presume him missing and/or dead, causing Danny Rand/The Iron Fist (Finn Jones) to take over Daredevil's crimefighting duties, lest New York turn into "a wretched hive of scum and villainy," to borrow a phrase from Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Now, The Devil of Hell's Kitchen is making a comeback in the first Netflix teaser for Season 3 of Daredevil, but the blinded lawyer isn't the optimistic idealist he once was. In fact, he's lost all faith in the system of law and order. Taking place in a church confessional, Matt (dressed in his original black garb) talks to an unseen priest, saying:
"I once believed that justice could be found in a court of law and in the light of day, but I was fooling myself. Darkness only responds to darkness. And the truth is, I'd rather die as the devil than live as Matt Murdock."
Watch it unfold in the tweet below:
Those are some pretty heavy words from a man who once followed a strict code of ethics, even when acting above the law as a vigilante. Losing Elektra (Elodie Yung) seems like it took a harder toll than we originally thought, a toll so large that Matt is losing faith in the very concept of goodness. He also looks bloodied in the video, which makes you wonder if he's just come from a fight that has confirmed his worst fears about the world.
Does this mean that Daredevil will no longer refrain from killing criminals? Has he been pushed over the edge, taking him down to the level of those he detests? Is he totally irredeemable and the demon that so many believe him to be? And what happened to Matt's red costume that he's forced to wear his old sweater, skin-tight pants, and eyeless ski mask?
We won't get definitive answers until Season 3 arrives, and sadly no specific date is announced in the trailer. The closest we get are the words "coming soon."
