Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith has revealed that the regeneration we saw in “The Time of the Doctor,” the Doctor Who Xmas episode, was very different from the other versions that were filmed.

Speaking at the WonderCon Q&A, Smith said: "It’s very interesting, the Christmas episode, and particularly the regeneration. We shot so many versions of that.”

Then he elaborated a bit more without going into too many details—bar the fact that at one point the Doctor lost *gasp* a leg! “We shot much more brutal, emotional and troubling takes and stories in there. The actual take that is used is an interesting one for me.”

If you guys recall, the Eleventh Doctor used his massive regeneration energy as a weapon against the alien ships that were hovering over the town of Christmas, destroying them in the process.

Though it was visually quite spectacular, Smith admitted he would have preferred one of the other alternate versions: “To be honest, although it’s still a great episode, I think perhaps of what we shot and what was cut I would have chosen differently.”

Are you surprised other versions of the Eleventh Time Lord's regeneration were shot? Were you satisfied with the one the powers that be ultimately chose for Matt Smith’s swan song?
