We've still got nearly a year to wait before District 9 director Neill Blomkamp's next sci-fi flick, Elysium, hits theaters, but we're finally glimpsing some details. First we got our hands on a synopsis to read, and now we've got the first official image.
The image, as you can see, features Matt Damon as Max, an "unlucky" guy who undertakes a daunting mission that could unite two disparate classes of people in a very socially divided 2159. From the look of things, he's on Earth, which is now a "ruined" planet where the lower class lives while the upper class sits in the lap of luxury on board a space station called Elysium.
Here's the official synopsis again:
"In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard the government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn't stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds."
We don't know much about Max's character, but it's clear from the image he's in the middle of a pretty heavy situation that requires a pretty big gun. The first official footage from the flick is supposed to debut at San Diego Comic-Con next week, so maybe we'll get more clues then. In the meantime, check out the full image below.
Elysium hits theaters in March 2013.
