Matt Smith really, really wants Chris Eccleston back for Who's 50th

Despite the fact that Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston said about Doctor Who, ''I never bathe in the same river twice,'' and that he'd never return to Who, it's not deterring the current Eleventh Time Lord, Matt Smith, from really wanting Eccleston to step back into the TARDIS for the show's 50th-anniversary specials once more.

And we may now have a flimsy, tiny bit of hope that it may happen after all.

In a recent interview about Who's 50th-anniversary bash, Smith said he still wanted the former Doctors to return for a multi-Doctor episode.

He said: "It's a [good idea], yeah. But that's easier said than done, I would have thought."

About Christopher Eccleston—who played the Doctor for one short season back when the beloved sci-fi series was finally returning to TV in 2005 under former showrunner Russell T Davies — Matt Smith said:

"Chris will be alright. Well, I mean, who knows? I'd love it. I'd love him to come back ... I love his Doctor. I really do. He was from Manchester. Proper hard. Leather jacket. He'd give my Doctor a bit of a whopping, wouldn't he?"

Smith was quoted to say about a month ago that "I think as an event if it did ever happen—I don't know how feasible it is—to get David [Tennant] and Chris [Eccleston] back would be amazing."

In a recent post about Christopher Eccleston's appearance at the National Theatre for a Q&A, someone asked the actor about Doctor Who, and this is what was reported over at Flick filosopher (which got us a tiny bit excited for a moment there):

He [Christopher Eccleston] also spoke with real warmth and enthusiasm about the character of the Doctor and what a real joy of a character it is to play. In response to a question about whether he felt he'd taken the character as far as he could he (very tellingly) said he felt that one series isn't enough to get under the skin of the character and that if he'd had two or three series he'd have developed the role considerably. He said that if you looked at the other Doctors (with the exception of Tom Baker) you can see them working out how to play the character through their first series because it's such a complex and challenging role. He said several times that there was more for him to do with the character. ...

Could there be a tiny glimmer of hope, then, that Eccleston may change his mind and make an appearance in one of Doctor Who's several anniversary specials in 2013 after all? Is there really a chance for Christopher Eccleston to step back into the TARDIS one more time?
