May 30 in Sci-Fi History: Easy Being Green

Listen, there's a lot to love about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The '80s cartoon got us through a lot of terrible middle-school homework, and screenings of the 1990 movie happened to be the site of a lot of first kisses around here.

And we owe a good deal of that gratitude to Kevin Eastman, who celebrates his 55th birthday today. Along with Peter Laird, Eastman launched the Ninja Turtles comic in May 1984. By 1987, the boys came roaring to television, and the rest is sci-fi history.

Eastman also happens to have been the publisher of Heavy Metal Magazine for a couple of decades. The magazine is celebrating its 40th anniversary this month, so check out some of its best covers here.

Also on this day in 1971, Idina Menzel was born. You know her. She's the voice behind your niece's favorite witch (Elsa in Frozen) and played your aunt's favorite witch (Elpheba in Wicked). Menzel was also famously and bizarrely referred to as "Adele Nazeem" (or "Dazeem," who knows?) by John Travolta at the 2014 Oscars. Either way, here:

Tomorrow (and Thursday, actually): We recall Total Recall.
