McDonald’s heeds Rick and Morty fans’ thunderous outcry and will be bringing back its Szechuan Sauce (again)

Hopefully, this will finally make for a happy meal.

McDonald’s will once again be bringing back its controversial Szechuan Sauce in the wake of seismic fan uproar over the condiment’s lack of availability.

The decision comes amid a churning Twitter insurgence against the fast-food giant for its dearth of Szechuan Sauce stashes — and in the aftermath of sightings of police presence at several McDonald’s locations, where cops were called to keep pissed-off Szechuan-atics at bay.

On Sunday, the chain tweeted that it plans to stock up on the sauce packets this winter, and copped that its “super-limited batch” clearly didn’t satiate enough fans of the sauce, which was inspired by the 1998 movie Mulan and exploded in cult popularity after the Adult Swim cartoon Rick and Morty gave it props.

“Between the costumes, the memes, and the cross-state travel, you, the fans, showed us what you got. And our super-limited batch, though well-intentioned, clearly wasn’t near enough to meet that demand,” the company wrote, explaining that the product will make yet another resurgence.

“Szechuan Sauce is coming back once again this winter. And instead of being one-day-only and limited to select restaurants, we’re bringing more — a lot more — so that any fan who’s willing to do whatever it takes for Szechuan Sauce will only have to ask for it at a nearby McDonald’s.”

“We want to make this right,” the chain added in closing.

Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland also took to Twitter on Sunday, saying he was "not happy" with how McDonald's handled the promo and urging fans not to take things out on McDonald's staffers.


Mania for the out-of-production sauce reached fever pitch last week after McDonald’s announced that Rick and Morty diehards could nab it for one day only — last Saturday, Oct. 7 — at select locations. The company also released a special poster celebrating its array of dipping sauces.

Rabid customers were miffed when they were unable to get their hands on the limited supply available, and stormed Twitter with missives against the company.

For fans’ — and the company’s — sake, here’s hoping McDonald’s puts the “fast” in fast food and speeds up that production, pronto.
