The folks at Disney continue to mine the studio’s archive for new live-action material, and the latest target is set to tackle a fan favorite from the late 1970s: Pete’s Dragon returns.
The beloved 1977 classic is getting a live-action/CGI remake, with aims to follow the basic trajectory of a young boy named Pete (Oakes Fegley) and his friend Elliott (who happens to be a dragon). The cast is filled out by Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays the park ranger who finds Elliott, and Robert Redford as her father.
As is typically the case with early trailers, this one is decidedly light on actual CGI dragon — though we do get a nice shot at the end. Which looks fine. But, with all the advances in technology these days, why not try something that would be a closer homage to the original film’s live-action/animated hybrid style? With modern effects, you’d have to think the studio could’ve done something truly amazing while honoring that animated vibe from the original film.
Pete’s Dragon is set to open nationwide on Aug. 12.
