Meet the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC: Phoenix, Iron Fist, Black Panther and more

The Marvel Universe has never been short on primal forces, be they Earthbound, galactic, or even universal in nature. From the Infinity Gems to the Elders of the Universe, the Celestials and Gods and myths made real, it's a place of legend and legacy.

Well, in Marvel Legacy #1, coming this fall as part of the larger "Legacy" initiative at Marvel Comics, we'll discover that some of those forces have a more direct legacy than ever revealed before. In a series of teaser images this week, Marvel has been pulling back the curtain on what they call the "Avengers of 1,000,000 BC." Inherently a little ridiculous based on what we know of actual human existence? Sure, but let's go ahead and suspend disbelief and have a little fun, shall we?

The characters released so far are, and on fine display in the gallery below: Agamotto the All-Seeing, Black Panther, Iron Fist, Phoenix, and Starbrand. If we know Marvel teasers (and we do), there are probably at least a couple more on the way, too. All of these characters already follow a legacy structure. We know that the power of the Black Panther, for example, is a mystical one passed down through generations, and that the Starbrand chooses new hosts to continue protecting the universe if one should expire. The Phoenix is an interesting one here; originally associated primarily with the Shi'ar, an alien race of bird people, the Phoenix Force is the protector of reality itself, and has chosen several human hosts over the years, but having a history with Earth that dates back a million years would be an entirely new wrinkle.

Likewise, the Iron Fist was a designation we've known simply as the protector of K'un L'un -- without the mystical city in place, it's a mystery why there would already be one. Agamotto has long been known as the first Sorcerer Supreme, though (his Eye may be the most familiar part of him, true believers).

Check out all five of the full-size teaser images so far below, and stay tuned for more on Marvel Legacy #1 soon.
