In the new trailer 20th Century Fox released today for Shane Black’s The Predator, we get a look at what Sterling K. Brown’s character calls “The Ultimate Predator” and GOOD LORD IT'S HUGE. We’re guessing this is what the tagline means when it says the hunt has evolved.
In addition to glimpses of a Predator the size of a small bus, we’re also treated to a few more shots of the eponymous planet-conquering aliens than we saw in the previous trailer. We also get a lot of shots of ex-soldiers wandering through the woods holding weapons, wandering through a lab holding weapons, wandering through stairways holding weapons.
But that’s not all. We’re also treated to several very quick shots of the Predator killing ex-soldiers, killing scientists, and stalking Olivia Munn and a young boy. And, oh. Keegan-Michael Key makes a vulgar yet pretty funny “Your mom” joke just before the one-minute mark.
Black, who directed Iron Man 3 and played a small role in the original 1987 film, has said he wants to revitalize the franchise by making this installment less about cartoonish musclebound superheroes and more about imperfect misfits who may even be dealing with PTSD.
Now, we’ll be honest — not much of that’s in the trailer here. But to be fair, that sort of nuanced character development is difficult to convey in a rapidly cut two-minute commercial for a sci-fi action thriller. So for now, we’ll just have to settle for that “Your mom” joke until we see the final product.
The Predator stalks its way into theaters on Sept. 14. So, come and get us, motherf**ker.
