Clara, the Paternoster Gang, Danny Pink, and now ...
It's starting to get a little crowded in this elevator. Not to say that I mind. A new Doctor often needs a bit of a hand in getting the ball rolling. That's more true in this case, since the Matt Smith era ended by tying up more or less every loose end Moffat had left hanging since series five. That means it's time to begin anew.
And with that in mind, I give you Keely Hawes, who will be playing Ms. Delphox in the upcoming fifth episode of Who's eighth series.
Yes, that's right. The fifth episode which we only just showed you set photos from. And, now, with the announcement of this new character, we're getting even more details on this particular episode. Delphox is a "powerful out of this world character with a dark secret" who the Doctor and Clara will meet on a "strange and puzzling" planet.
Steven Moffat himself is pleased with the casting, saying, "Anyone watching Jed Mercurio's amazing Line of Duty will know that Keeley Hawes is having one hell of a year. And now it's about to get even better as she achieves the greatest villainy yet attempted on Doctor Who - she plays a banker."
So, that explains all the suits. But we're still left with that "dark secret." Is that secret something kept snugly in the confines of the one episode, or will it have larger implications? Obviously, if you're a giant dweeb (like me), you'll wonder if perhaps Delphox could be that other renegade Time Lord, the Rani.
Or, if you want to make the fanboys mad, a gender-swapped Master. Which isn't as crazy as you'd think. John Simm played the Master after starring in Life on Mars. Hawes played the lead in the Life on Mars spinoff Ashes to Ashes. So, you never know.
In any event, Hawes is yet another welcome addition. This Capaldi series is finally beginning to come into focus.
