When you get to talk legendary toy lines and football with an NFL legend, you know you’re doing Comic-Con right.
Hardcore toy collectors and nerds who came of age in the 1970s know all about the wonder about MEGO action figures. Those glorious 8” figures — featuring everyone from the DC and Marvel heroes to Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, and just about any TV series of the era — just ooze nostalgia for a great many folks.
Now Mego is back! The company has relaunched under the guidance of CEO Marty Abrams with a line of 8-inch and 14-inch figures that will debut exclusively at Target this month.
The very first figure is a nod to the past: a 14-inch Joe Namath action figure!
Namath was the first licensed Mego figure way back when, and he says he was thrilled to get the call that the company wanted to revisit his glory days as a trailblazing and fashion-forward NFL QB. His new figure even includes the swaggy fur coat Namath once wore on the sideline of an NFL game.
SYFY WIRE talked with both men about the return of MEGO, why it’s important that they reach more than just adult collectors to survive, and why at 75, Broadway Joe remains as cool as ever!
