Last year, the fifth issue of B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know revealed that Hellboy was not as dead as some fans may have thought. In fact, he’s coming back to comics in a return that has been planned for years. But where some fans may be looking forward to Hellboy back on Earth, creator Mike Mignola doesn’t exactly feel good about putting the character back in the thick of things.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mignola said there was a note of “nice quiet ‘oh now you’re in retirement’” at the end of Hellboy in Hell, “except for that other thing he has to do.” It seems like any quiet the character had is going to vanish as it’s time for him to return to accomplish what he was meant to.
“I feel bad about it, and I hope he had a good time on that couch where I left him. I hope he enjoyed the rest, but there’s a few things you still need to do, and it’s gonna be s—-y,” Mignola told Entertainment Weekly. “I read too much Michael Moorcock in high school, that’s what it is. I have that ‘doomed hero’ thing. He’s still got to take a beating.”
That beating might involve the devil Vavara, but Mignola would not reveal or confirn any details about exactly what Hellboy has to do or face moving forward. All he would say in the interview is that things are not going to be easy for Hellboy.
Hopefully we’ll find out more about what's ahead when issue six is released May 9. What are you looking forward to seeing when Hellboy returns?
