In the first multimedia move that Minecraft has done since the Always Sunny in Philadelphia guy pulled out of directing its film adaptation, the building game is coming to comics. Thanks to Dark Horse and a couple talented creators, the first Minecraft graphic novel is on its way — and is previewing some of its art ahead of New York Comic Con.
According to a release, the multiplatform bestseller is getting the comic treatment from writer Sfé R. Monster, artist Sarah Graley, and letterer John J. Hill. “We are very excited at the prospect of bringing Minecraft to comics,” Dark Horse president and founder Mike Richardson said in a statement. “The world of Minecraft is vast with countless stories to tell,” Richardson points out, which draws comparisons to something equally flexible — LEGOs. If you can build it, you can do it in both systems, so that same creativity could see play in comic form.
Minecraft Volume 1, the first release, follows everyday kid Tyler, who — out of the game — has recently moved away from his hometown. From there, the story pivots to explore his life inside of Minecraft that he shares with his gaming buddies.
And while most people play the game their own way, this group decides to zero in on one goal: get to the end and beat a dragon. Sounds like the perfect fantasy quest for a comic. Check out the gallery below for some preview pages.
Minecraft Volume 1 goes on sale next summer.
