If you like the way Stranger Things character Dustin dresses, you are not alone. The fan favorite nougat-lover is seen wearing a vintage purple dinosaur sweatshirt from the Science Museum of Minnesota in the first episode of the new season, and fans have decided that this is a must have item.
The only problem is that the shirt was only ever available from the museum’s gift shop, and that was back in, you guessed it, the 1980’s.
Fans of the show have now digitally besieged the museum asking about the "thunder lizard" clothing item. Sarah Imholte, the public relations specialist for the Science Museum, spoke with Twin Cities Pioneer Press, saying that they are already working on reproducing the vintage sweatshirts, and that they would be available later this week.
She went on to say, “We just had no idea it would be included in the show, it went viral.” Viral indeed, the following post from the museum has already reached close to 300,000 people.
The museum has wisely added a signup page to its website.
This is yet another instance of the Netflix sci-fi/fantasy phenomenon becoming a cultural retro force. If the show can make people desperate to get their hands on 1980’s museum gift shop outerwear, what can't they do? Farcical images of scientists being taken off their other assignments to make new (old) purple dinosaur sweatshirts in the middle of the night keep dancing through our heads. What will the cultural zeitgeist demand next?
Fingers crossed that if the show ever hits the 90’s, Steve Harrington won't suddenly develop a taste for a certain McNugget dipping sauce.
