The first season of The Flash is now underway, but the show's not done adding new enemies for Barry Allen.
The producers of the new CW series promised us a lot of comic-book goodness right out of the gate, and so far The Flash has definitely delivered. The first episode gave us an origin story, a battle with Weather Wizard, and a couple of juicy DC Comics easter eggs lurking in the background, and we already know the episodes to come will bring characters like Captain Cold, Heatwave, the General, Plastique, Firestorm and Professor Zoom into the action. Now The Flash has added yet another DC Comics character, and he's one of the most interesting people Barry Allen ever battled.
According to THR, Smash and Chasing Life star Andy Mientus has joined the show as Harley Rathaway, aka Pied Piper, for two episodes later this season. The character is described as a "genius who used to work at STAR Labs" until a falling-out with Tom Cavanagh's Dr. Harrison Wells drove him away from the company. The same explosion that gave Barry his Flash powers rendered Rathaway deaf, and he eventually develops sonic weaponry in an effort to get back at Wells by taking down Barry.
In the pre-New 52 comics, Rathaway is a character who was born deaf, is eventually cured and becomes obsessed with sound, eventually developing sonic devices that he used for a life of crime. He battled the Flash and joined the Rogues, but after Barry Allen's death in Crisis on Infinite Earths he reformed, becoming a friend and ally to Barry's successor as the Flash, Wally West. After his reformation, he also came out as gay, making him one of the first openly gay DC characters.
Pied Piper will appeared in the 11th and 12th episodes of The Flash this season. The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8/7C on The CW.
