Mortal Engines has been a gigantic mechanical question mark for a while. But, after an initial teaser and plenty of concept art, Peter Jackson’s big-budget production of his long-time coworker Christian Rivers’ Philip Reeve adaptation has a full-length trailer. The movie takes Reeve’s novel about a civilization that arose from the ashes of our own, which means a desolate wasteland populated by nation-state-sized vehicles traversing the worst case of road rage the earth has ever seen.
This takes the post-apocalypse of something like the parched Mad Max: Fury Road to a more developed level, which makes it harder to upheave and destroy the status quo. Think the Rebellion and the Empire from Star Wars.
Take a look:
The conspiratorial Hugo Weaving survives an assassination attempt, everything is a churning mess of gears and harpoons, and a Death Star-like superweapon are all teased within the gigantic spectacle of these huge car-cities.
Who knows if the story can hold up the sheer weight of all that CGI but it’s hard to deny its impressive scale.
Mortal Engines opens in theaters on December 14.
