This really is turning into a bogus journey… in development hell. Despite some rather positive signs in May that Bill & Ted 3 is definitely, definitely happening, its star Keanu Reeves is now saying otherwise. Dude! This is most heinous.
"I don't know if it's a reality," Reeves tells Yahoo Movies in an interview published Friday. "We've been trying for a long time to get that film made, and it still has its challenges."
This is certainly a strange and un-excellent outcome, considering The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed that the film, titled Bill & Ted Face the Music, had been opened up to international sales at the Cannes Film Festival.
Reeves and co-star Alex Winter even put out a statement in May confirming that it was all-go, saying: "We couldn't be more excited to get the whole band back together again. Chris and Ed wrote an amazing script, and with Dean at the helm we've got a dream team!"
At this stage, the movie is still in preproduction. MGM owns the rights to the film and was expected to be releasing it stateside under its Orion Pictures banner.
However, there have been warning signs in the past that it's been an uphill battle to get the film made.
In January, writer Ed Solomon (who created the characters and wrote the first two movies with Chris Matheson) revealed in an interview that they were struggling to get funding for the project, as movie studios wanted instead to reboot the franchise with a younger cast.
"We are having issues raising money for it, getting it financed, because what we get all the time – all the time – is people wanting to reboot it,” Solomon told Digital Spy.
It sounds as though money could still be the issue here, either with international sales not going as well as they expected, or MGM having a change of heart. Either way, we can't help but think this is a crying shame – the campaign to get Bill & Ted back on the big screen starts here!
