Wannabe Avengers? Not these superheroes. The semi-reunited Spice Girls (taking meetings together if not touring), whose “Spice Up Your Life” music video is the Blade Runner-iest thing ever to come from pop, are creating an animated film project in which their likenesses will be superpowered.
According to Variety, each of the girls — Victoria Beckham (“Posh Spice”), Melanie Brown (“Scary Spice”), Emma Bunton (“Baby Spice”), Melanie Chisholm (“Sporty Spice”), and Geri Halliwell (“Ginger Spice”) — will voice a superhero who has a “girl power” unique to her branding and personality. Does that mean something in the vein of The Powerpuff Girls, in which sugar, spice, and everything nice was complicated by the addition of the mutagen Chemical X? Yeah, maybe.
But it could also mean that the ‘90s band has spied a large lack in the current blockbuster market — female superheroes, let alone a female supergroup — that they have plenty of experience filling. Variety’s source told the paper that the group is "thinking big" when it comes to a potential global franchise: "They’re the most successful girl group on the planet. It’s just what Marvel or Disney needs.”
Marvel and Disney certainly need to be thinking about gender parity in their super-offerings, so if it takes the scary, posh, sporty, baby, and ginger powers of the best-selling female group of all time, well then Viva Forever. But those increasingly unlikely powers certainly leave a lot of room for creativity in this mix of genres, which could lead to something as unexpectedly popular as X-Men's Dazzler or the KISS comics.
