What do you get when you mix Bond, James Bond, with Bean, Mr. Bean? Well, you get Rowan Atkinson as the accidental secret agent Johnny English, served with a cup of tea and some jolly guffaws.
Check out the first trailer for Johnny English Strikes Again, the third installment of the franchise that finds Rowan Atkinson, aka Mr. Bean, as Britain’s most confident and inept spy. Whereas the first film found Johnny as Britain’s only secret agent left standing, round three finds him as the only one who hasn’t been outed by a cyber-attack revealing the identity of every active undercover MI5 operative.
Fortunately for the good of the world, and for fans of a certain brand of bumbling comedy, Johnny English is retired, and therefore not an active agent, and therefore not compromised. And therefore, yet again, the world can depend upon his unique set of outdated skills to find the evil hacker, master modern technology, and save the day.
Or at least make you laugh a little along the way. Seriously, just try and get through the trailer above with a straight face. Per usual, Atkinson’s timing and physical comedy will make you laugh in spite of yourself — like even though you know it’s dumb, and you can’t imagine why they keep making these, you just can’t help but enjoy it. Which makes it kind of smart, right?
And don’t worry, you’re not alone, the two previous films have racked up over $320 million in worldwide box office receipts. Which is another answer for you in case you were still confused as to why there’s another Johnny English film coming across the pond.
A release date has yet to be set for Johnny English Strikes Again, which was directed by David Kerr and also stars Ben Miller, Jake Lacy, two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson as Britain’s prime minister, and former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko as the mysterious Ophelia. God save the Bean.
