Naomi Watts (The Ring, King Kong) is headed to Westeros as the main character in HBO's Game of Thones prequel, Variety has confirmed. Her unnamed role is described as “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”
While not too much is known about the project, we do know that it will be set a few thousand years before the current GoT timeline, which wraps up sometime next year in the eighth and final season.
Created by Jane Goldman, the series will be set in the "Age of Heroes," a period known to most Westerosi as myth, folklore, or fairy tale. It was during this time that many of the houses we all know and love (e.g. Stark, Targaryen, Bolton) were first founded. When the show premieres, this golden age will begin to enter "its darkest hour."
However, Goldman's spinoff isn't the only one in development. As early as January of this year, five GoT-related projects (including Goldman's) were said to be in development. And why not? the network would be crazy not to milk George R.R. Martin's beloved high-fantasy series for all it's worth.
Many reports note that Season 8 of Game of Thrones will debut on HBO in the first half of 2019. However, like the people of Westeros preparing for winter, we must be prepared for the possibility that it could be a much longer wait.
