Following yesterday’s first look at Natalie Portman in director Alex Garland’s (Ex Machina) new sci-fi horror movie Annihilation, Paramount Pictures and Skydance have unleashed the first teaser trailer for the upcoming film.

Based on the first book in Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy, Annihilation is written by Garland himself and stars Portman (Black Swan), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Atypical), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin, Deepwater Horizon), Tessa Thompson (Westworld, Thor: The Dark World), Tuva Novotny (Nobel), and Oscar Isaac, who is reuniting with his Ex Machina director for this film.

The movie follows a team of scientists (led by Portman) who go on an expedition to explore a mysterious Eden-like place called Area X that’s been “taken over by a mysterious force.” As they dig deeper, they discover a “massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding.” But it’s the secrets that lie within that may be the real danger.

The trailer has a strong dreamlike quality to it, mixed in with a potent sense of dread, and from the look of things, it may be that Alex Garland’s Ex Machina follow-up could hit the sweet spot again.

Annihilation will arrive in theaters on Feb. 23, 2018.
