National Treasure could find new life on Disney's upcoming streaming service

There's a very good chance that the adventures of Benjamin Gates and his treasure-hunting team of computer whiz Riley Poole and Abigail Chase will be returning for another round of Americana thievery. Unfortunately, another addition to the National Treasure franchise probably won't be on the big screen.

"The fact is it’ll probably be made as a streaming film. Which is great for some people and not great for others," director Jon Turtletaub told /Film while promoting his latest movie, The Meg. In the first two outings of the franchise, Gates was played by Nicolas Cage, with Justin Bartha playing Poole and Diane Kruger as Chase. It's unclear, however, exactly how a new film — and its cast — may shape up.

Turtletaub's use of the term "streaming film" refers to Disney's upcoming streaming service, which will compete with Netflix and Hulu by exclusively offering classic House of mouse movies and shows, while also producing original content of its own. Seeing another National Treasure movie on this service would be totally fine by fans, we're betting — as long as the studio brings back the original cast and doesn't skimp on the budget.

Just recently, Turtletaub claimed that Disney's not interested in a third installment, saying the studio appears to be preoccupied with films it feels will make more money at the box office. Still, he remains unfazed — on the contrary, he really, really wants get it made.

"I need you to make a lot of money in the stock market so you can go finance this film," he said during his /Film interview. "I would make it tomorrow.  Finding the right script is hard. It was brutal for the first two. It’s still gonna be brutal for the third. But I don’t think Disney wants to make it. And I think they have other things they wanna make more."

In some ways, the National Treasure movies are a bit like the Mission: Impossible series. They need to keep upping the ante for each installment to keep us enthralled. In the first, Cage stole the Declaration of Independence, and in the second, he freakin' kidnapped the president of the United States.

What do you think they'll steal in the third?
