What started as an intriguing thought exercise has turned into a real-life movie, one that could finally put a legendary sci-fi franchise back on track. It’s official: Neill Blomkamp is making a new Alien film, and we don’t mean Prometheus 2.
While he was busy working on other projects, most notably Chappie, Blomkamp (District 9) kept busy by kicking around ideas for an Alien sequel that could be the film we’ve been waiting for ever since Aliens. Blomkamp actually developed some awesome concept art for the project, and though it seemed like the longest long shot, he has apparently managed to score a green light.
He’s seriously making a new Alien film, and if his confirmation on Instagram wasn’t enough, Variety is also reporting that the deal has been closed at 20th Century Fox. To be clear: This is a separate project from Prometheus 2, set several years ahead of the prequel series, and original creator Ridley Scott is attached to produce both projects.
Though Prometheus was a decent hit at the box office, it went through more than a few rewrites along the way and received a mixed reception from fans and critics. Momentum has been slow for the pending sequel, and with a buzzy director like Blomkamp champing at the bit to make an Alien movie (that actually sounds pretty cool), it’s not a shocker the studio would double down and try to revive the main brand too.
As for exactly what Blomkamp’s film will look like? We have no clue. But the concept art he had commissioned offers more than a few hints. There’s no word on whether Sigourney Weaver will be back to play Ellen Ripley, but Blomkamp has been adamant he wants her on board. If a deal is closed, it stands to reason she could be a part of the deal. The concept art also features Aliens co-star Michael Biehn, so it’s possible Cpl. Dwayne Hicks could be back as well.
Are you glad to hear we’ll finally be getting a proper Aliens sequel?
