The first season of Guillermo del Toro's Trollhunters ended with one heck of a cliffhanger, and now we know the series will officially be back for more. Phew.
Netflix has confirmed Trollhunters will be back later this year for a 13-episode second season, continuing Jim's adventures as he heads into the heart of the Darklands. After the tragic passing of Anton Yelchin, who voices the titular Trollhunter, many fans wondered what effect it would have on the series moving forward. Thankfully, del Toro said they actually have enough content recorded from Yelchin to preserve much of his performance moving into this new run of episodes. Beyond that, there's actually a natural break already in the story down the line that allows for the character's voice to change, and del Toro said they'll likely use that to introduce a new voice actor for future seasons.
As for the second season, here's what del Toro told Entertainment Weekly about the story:
"The Darklands are quite an ordeal in themselves. They are not a light walk in the park. They are not a one-action sequence and we go away. There's a good [amount] in the Darklands. We have character recalls that were introduced in the first season that you didn't know how they'd pay off, or you thought you'd know how they pay off, and you re-encounter them and go, 'Oh, so this is who the mysterious lady that gives supernatural powers to Angor Rot is,' for example. She becomes quite a character in the second season. You re-encounter a character I love — I won't tell you who — but we re-encounter that character now in the Darklands. We resolve a lot more of the backstory of Blinky and AAARRRGGHH!!!, for example. And of course, the Mexican dentist comes back."
Del Toro also revealed that they have the entire series mapped out as a 52-episode saga, and with the show proving to be Netflix's most successful original kids' series ever, he's hopeful they'll get the chance to tell the entire story.
Season 2 of Trollhunters is slated to premiere later this year on Netflix.
