Trailers for the upcoming sci-fi film Annihilation have given us a brief look at what we’ll see beyond the strange “shimmer.” Now a new featurette is showing us even more of the creepy environment in Area X, as the cast expands on what their characters encounter on their daring mission.

Directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina) and based on the first book in Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy, Annihilation features a team of scientists who go on a mission into Area X to try and find out what’s happening as it spreads. The new video features the women behind those scientists: Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, and Tuva Novotny, offering their take on the shimmer and the mysterious environment they find inside.

Mixed with images we’ve previously seen are some new glimpses of the mutations and strange landscapes found by the characters. According to Leigh, the shimmer is moving quickly and is close to devouring cities, hence their vital mission to find out what’s going on. Portman calls the mutations “terrifying,” while Thompson says there are “creepy things happening,” and Novotny calls it “really eerie.”

With descriptions like that, the film is sure to be an exciting and horrifying journey as we see whether these women can survive long enough to uncover the mysteries of the shimmer.

Speaking of uncovering mysteries, Paramount just dropped a cool new viral site for the film, which allows you to digitally unlock even more new footage, and decode and create messages.

Annihilation opens wide Feb. 23, will you be shimmering to the theater to go see it?
