This December, 20th Century Fox will have the massive task of trying to break the curse that's been plaguing video game adaptations for decades by hopefully delivering a hit with Assassin’s Creed

The movie adaptation of Ubisoft’s hit video game series is produced by and stars Michael Fassbender and is being helmed by his Macbeth director, Justin Kurzel. Since the two managed to make sweet music together (along with co-star Marion Cotillard) with the big-screen adaptation of William Shakespeare’s famous “cursed” play, I’m holding out hope that the movie will nail it on the head and be all kinds of awesome.

In Assassin’s Creed, Michael Fassbender plays the dual roles of Callum Lynch, a Death Row inmate who’s saved from execution so that Abstergo Industries can use him to unlock the genetic memories of his ancestor, an Assassin named Aguilar (also played by Fassbender), who lived during the Spanish Inquisition.

The batch of new official images in the gallery below puts the spotlight on Aguilar in all his Assassin glory, but we also have two pics featuring Callum Lynch and Marion Cotillard’s character, Dr. Sophia Rikkin. For fans of the video games, the movie introduces Callum Lynch and Aguilar as new characters that will be part of the official canon (the action-adventure film is also the first production for the gaming giant's new movie division, Ubisoft Motion Pictures).

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Assassin’s Creed also stars Jeremy Irons, Ariane Labed, Michael K. Williams, Callum Turner and Brendan Gleeson. The movie will take a leap of faith on the big screen on Dec. 21. Have a look at the new images, and let us know what you think!
