As Daredevil embarks on Season 3 with an all-original story and no comic book roadmap to help Matt Murdock navigate the streets of Hell’s Kitchen, longtime fans can still rest assured that the show is staying true to its comic book roots, says showrunner Erik Oleson.
Speaking on a recent episode of Earth’s Mightiest Show, Oleson said the new season will do more than tip its hat to the iconic comic hero created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Bill Everett. With tons of recognizable images and a trove of Easter eggs, Season 3 may be working with an all-new script — but it’ll borrow directly from the printed page to recreate some of the comics’ most memorable iconography.
“‘There are certain key comic frames that you will recognize on the screen in Season 3,” said Oleson. “There’s that iconic shot of Daredevil holding onto a crucifix on top of a church. But for people who have no familiarity with the comic runs, it will feel organic and natural — you’ll never even notice it.”
Marvel also introduced an intriguing new piece of footage from Season 3 — one that puts Matt Murdock at violent odds with Melvin Potter, his longtime suit supplier. Check it out around the 12:10 mark in the video below:
We’ve known for a while that The Man Without Fear is getting back to basics with his superhero duds for the new batch of episodes, so the clip has us curious about whether the suit becomes a point of contention between Daredevil and Potter. As twitchy as Melvin can be, though, maybe it really does all come down to protecting Betsy.
No matter where the new story goes, Oleson said viewers who bring a deep familiarity with the comics will be rewarded with plenty of visual cues hidden in plain sight.
“There’s all sort of hidden Easter eggs this season, and I’ll be very curious to see which ones get by the audience — because there’s more than you think there are,” he said. “We wanted to do something that was a little bit more hardcore…and I think we ended up pulling that off.”
The long wait’s almost over. Murdock, Foggy, Karen, Wilson Fisk, and maybe even Stick and Elektra will be back in Hell’s Kitchen Friday, when Daredevil makes its Netflix return for Season 3.
