As that new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens made clear, things have changed a whole lot over the past few decades — and here are some new details at everything that’s happened in between.
As part of the massive Star Wars Celebration, Marvel has unveiled some new details related to the four-issue event series Star Wars: Shattered Empire, which will apparently pick up the story in the immediate aftermath of Return of the Jedi, following the Rebellion’s win over the Empire in the Battle of Endor.
That new trailer for The Force Awakens has hinted at some major changes in the Empire (i.e. a new name, potential factions[?], new hardware, etc.), and Marvel promises this series will be the first effort to fill in the gaps and explain exactly how the galaxy far, far away has reached this new status quo.
"The world has been wondering what happened after the fall of the Empire since the credits first rolled on Return of the Jedi in 1983," series editor Jordan D. White said. "Now, on the dawn of the next chapter of the saga, we're incredibly proud to be involved in revealing the events that happen immediately following the end of Return of the Jedi!"
In addition to telling the story of one of the most mysterious (and compelling) eras in the Star Wars canon, the event series will also bring some A-list creative talent. The series will be helmed by writer Greg Rucka and artist Marco Checchetto. The duo previously collaborated on the 2011 Punisher comic, and Rucka is writing a new in-canon novel based around a Han Solo adventure.
The first issue of Star Wars: Shattered Empire hits shelves in September.
