Now that drama surrounding The Batman seems to be over (at least as far as who's directing it is concerned -- the script is another matter), it's time to turn our attention to other DC Films projects still in search of directors. There are several -- including The Flash, which has already dropped two directors and is now apparently in the midst of another rewrite -- but today we're rounding up a couple of directorial tidbits for Suicide Squad 2 and Green Lantern Corps.
Both bits of news come from Meet the Movie Press by way of Jeff Sneider, who stressed that nothing is official and it's still early with regard to these projects.
Now, on to Suicide Squad 2. Last we heard, the frontrunner to direct the flick was Mel Gibson, a strange but headline-grabbing choice, and according to Sneider he still has the job if he wants it, but another name has entered the list of contenders: Jaume Collet-Sera (Orphan, Run All Night), a Spanish director who's built his career with smaller-budget films at Warners and might be ready to make a blockbuster.
"He delivers hits on a mid-sized budget. He can make a lot out of a little," Sneider said, and latter added, "He's a slick director. He's a diverse hire."
Again, it's apparently still Gibson's job if he wants it, but Collet-Sera's built trust at Warner Bros. and it might be time for him to leap to the next level.
So, how about Green Lantern Corps? According to Justin Kroll of Variety, Corps is on a list of films, along with Squad 2, that Warner Bros. is considering to shoot this year, alongside Aquaman, so they can get a jump on another film while they wait for the likely 2018 production start of The Batman. If that's the case, it's probably nearing the time when the film has to settle on a director, and apparently Warner Bros. might not have to look beyond the script for that. Sneider noted that Green Lantern Corps co-writer David S. Goyer, who's been working on DC films since Batman Begins (2005), might step into the director's chair for this one.
"I'm hearing David Goyer could very well wind up directing Green Lantern Corps himself. When you look at screenwriters that are taking the plunge and directing these movies themselves, we saw rumors last month that Simon Kinberg was going to direct the next X-Men movie. David Goyer is responsible for this entire DC Universe, he wrote Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. He wrote Man of Steel, he is the architect, if you will. He is writing and producing Green Lantern Corps, so it’s just very well, what I have heard, one of those situations where he could be like 'Listen, I think I may be the best guy for the job, nobody knows this like I do.'"
Goyer has a somewhat mixed history with directing, including Blade: Trinity and episodes of his TV series Da Vinci's Demons, and he's certainly received a mixed reception from fans when it comes to his DC Films contributions so far. That said, he's spent a lot of time in the trenches with Warner Bros. on these films at this point, so this might be something the studio feels he deserves by now. We'll just have to wait and see, because right now we don't even know when this film will go into production.
So, that's two interesting new director options for two DC Films projects. What do you think?
