New extended trailer for Syfy's Z Nation shows a whole lot more of the zombie apocalypse

Aside from that all-too-brief teaser clip we saw a while back, Syfy hasn’t released a whole lot of footage from the upcoming zombie series Z Nation. Until now.

Ahead of the series’ Sept. 12 debut, the network has released an extended trailer via a free “Sneak Peek” over at Amazon. It shows off quite a bit of new footage, and honestly looks much more solid than the brief teaser trailer indicated.

The effects and cinematography look decent, and it definitely has a Walking Dead vibe around the edges — but the series feels a bit brighter and more hopeful, as opposed to just the all-out darkness we know and love in AMC’s horror series. There also seems to be a driving story arc quickly established in the pilot.

As Walking Dead has proven, viewers love to watch zombies. But that show has succeeded because it’s good, not just because it features insane gore and undead craziness. Here’s hoping Z Nation producer Karl Schaefer (Eureka) has this one on the right track. If nothing else, the new footage definitely has our curiosity piqued.

They’ve also assembled a cast that features some familiar faces for genre fans, including Harold Perrineau (Lost), DJ Qualls (Supernatural) and Tom Everett Scott (Southland, Beauty and the Beast). Qualls positively steals the show every time he pops up in Supernatural, so we’re glad to see him get a meaty genre role here.

The extended trailer isn’t available for embed, but you can check it out for free over at Amazon.

So what do you think? Is this a show you’ll be checking out later this month?
