Milly Shapiro is probably a very nice girl, just as Linda Blair is a very nice woman. But watching the new trailer for A24’s upcoming horror film Hereditary (starring Shapiro and Toni Collette), you have the same suspicions that people had when first watching the star of The Exorcist.
The film, writer/director Ari Aster’s debut, is about the death of a family’s matriarch and its effect on her daughter and granddaughter. Also maybe ghosts, evil, and magic. Whatever’s really going on, it looks terrifying.
We knew things were going to be pretty wild after the first trailer was released, but that focused much more on the editing and Collette’s performance. Now, watching the consuming interior madness affecting Charlie (Shapiro) — whether she’s fiddling with a toy or being smiled at during a funeral — clicks into the sound design.
The glottal clicks she makes with her mouth, the crunches of (hopefully) food, and her wavering voice as she talks to family members sure to be beset by horrors make for squirmy watching and an endless tease for horror junkies.
