New Hobbit 2 images tease a Smaug encounter + an iconic escape scene

Finally—and it's about time—we have two new promo images for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

*Mild book and movie spoilers below*

Now that that warning's out of the way, yes, we have two new promo images/key art for the second flick in director Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug.

The first image shows our intrepid company of dwarves—along with our dear Bilbo—in their famous escape from the elves of Mirkwood forest. Down a raging river. In wooden barrels. Not the safest way to travel or to escape, to say the least; but they all look none the worse for wear, despite the couple of arrows sticking out of one such barrel.

(The Tolkieniacs over at The One Ring.net points out to what look like a few differences between the scene in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit novel and the movie.)

The second new promo image is apparently a piece of key art that has Bilbo reflected in big bad Smaug’s eye. Nothing too mind-blowing, but cool enough.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will hit theatres on Dec. 13, 2013. Are you looking forward to it?
