A new Marvel Star Wars comic will explain C-3PO's red arm

A few weeks ago, when a wave of new images from Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit the 'net, many fans noticed something quite different about C-3PO, namely that his left arm was no longer golden, and was instead bright red. Obviously, living in the midst of a galactic civil war can generate some wear and tear (remember that time he got torn to pieces on Bespin?), so we all understood, at least in a basic way, the why of the new arm. What we didn't know was the how. How did this pristine golden droid end up with a replacement limb?

Well, The Force Awakens itself might not tell us, but Marvel Comics will. Today the publisher announced Star Wars Special: C-3PO #1, a brand-new one-shot story set before the film that will, among other things, tell us what happened to Threepio's arm. Writer James Robinson and artist Tony Harris, the acclaimed team behind the legendary Starman series, will reunite for the title, which is billed as a Threepio solo adventure.

“That’s a really exciting part of doing this story,” Robinson said. “I saw a photo of C-3PO with his red arm the other day and I thought ‘Wow, I’m the writer who gets to explain that.’”

The issue will arrive in December to coincide with The Force Awakens, joining a robust lineup of Marvel Star Wars titles that already includes a main series and titles devoted to Princess Leia, Darth Vader and Lando Calrissian. Check out a cover for the book below.
