Not content to be one of the greatest horror directors who ever lived, John Carpenter has embraced a new career in music — and the latest video for his new tune is vintage Carpenter.

Carpenter has released a video for “Utopian Facade,” the penultimate track on his second album, Lost Themes II. Carpenter’s series of Lost Themes albums are essentially what the title implies, “lost” soundtrack pieces from films that don’t exist. It’s Carpenter channeling the synth musical chops that made his classic horror films so terrifying in the 1980s, and the video for “Utopian Facade” is a micro horror movie all its own.

The video focuses on a few inhabitants of a Tron-like utopia, but not everything is perfect in this little world. The video was directed by Gavin Hignight and Ben Verhulst. The duo aimed to honor Carpenter’s style without aping it, and mostly pull it off throughout the 3+ minute run time. They even threw a trippy cameo in for the final scene. Well played.
