If there's one thing that characters in horror movies never seem to learn, it's that going down into a basement is usually a bad idea.

That doesn't seem to have occurred to the person whose POV we share in this clip from Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, the new spinoff movie from the popular horror franchise that's arriving later this week.

We're not sure what our unseen character is looking for down there, but it's definitely not what he expected to find. And it's the kind of thing that, once you see it, should keep you out of dark, dank cellars for a good, long time, if not permanently.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is not part of the main series, which skipped its usual Halloween opening this past October, but is an offshoot that is tied indirectly to the other films and is said to have a Latino theme. What that all means is yet to be fully revealed, since as usual, the filmmakers have kept the plot and other details closely guarded secrets.

We do know that the movie incorporates the "found footage" style of the others in the series, and that it takes place in Oxnard, Calif., a long way from the settings of the previous entries. It's written and directed by Christopher Landon, who's been involved in writing many of the original film's sequels.

As for the original series, Paranormal Activity 5 will come out on Oct. 24, 2014, but The Marked Ones is haunting theaters this Friday (Jan. 3). Check out the clip below and see if you think it's creepy enough to make you kick off the new year with a dose of horror this weekend.
